Taryn grew up in Hawaii, the eldest of two children. Her father was a Navy man, stationed at Pearl Harbor. Her mother was a military wife, and a stay at home mom who made her family her first priority. When Taryn was 17, her father passed away after a short battle with prostate cancer, and her mother moved the children to San Diego to be closer to Taryn's maternal grandparents. Taryn graduated with honors and did her undergraduate program at University of California, majoring in biology, and was accepted to Johns Hopkins University for medical school. After her internship and training at Lennox Hill, she set up in private practice in Lower Manhattan.

Her mother and sister both live nearby. Her younger, very pretty, sister is an actress on a soap opera and does the occasional Broadway or off-Broadway show. Taryn's mother lives in Forest Hills, where she is active in the local senior theater. Taryn has a one bedroom apartment, not far from her office, and a cat named Trauma.

Marriage and family have eluded her, though they have never been a priority. She reads, watches historical dramas and reality shows on television, and enjoys eating out because she can't cook.

Her practice specializes in treating persons with post traumatic stress, deprogramming, criminal psychosis and other disorders that bring her into contact with criminals and law enforcement officers alike. Her non judgemental attitude is helpful, but she is often accused of being unemotional and distant. Dr. Barbieri is an excellent psychiatrist, and available for new patients.
